We are being tested. Time is fluid. Why can't you be happy for me?

A thorough litmus for the musical dexterity of James Banbury and Joseph Von Hess, the pair behind Blood Wine or Honey, Testing Time finds the funk-edged keys of multi-talented London singer, musician and composer Kamal (Neighbourhood Recordings) backed by an undulating, stumbling, slippery 7/8 rhythm and stirred gently into a straight up 4/4 mid-section, then washed through an 18-strong-choir-backed meditation on the strange fate of the bourgeoisie…

Zoë Brewster, a key figure of the extraordinary ‘90s Hong Kong music scene, adds a vocal lamenting the precariat: “we did not foresee / the petite bourgeoisie / would be so deadly / in their polity / their ambiguity”... Before we know it, though, we're tripped and tricked into a final full-village-band 7/8 canter, replete with massed clarinets and a sinister bass undertow, as the vocal and instrumental refrains return.

why can't you be
happy for me
happy for me
only this one key
I move when I'm free move and I'm free
this dance is for me
it's eternity all eternity
everybody see
in this reality this reality
making plans to be
someone's fantasy someone's fantasy
we did not foresee the petite bourgeoisie
would be so deadly
in their polity, their ambiguity
some patriarchy
it’s just one plc for the whole family

Blood Wine or Honey Hong Kong

Blood Wine or Honey's distinctive sound is created in the industrial warehouses and hidden rural settlements of Hong Kong, surrounded by the low-end throb of heavy machinery, the lingering scent of hand sanitiser and the humidity of the South China Sea. ... more
